..we believe gospel presence should precede gospel proclamation. We want to be the mouth, hands and feet of Jesus to our local community. As God sent his Son Jesus into the world to demonstrate who He is, we believe we, the church, are called to the same mission. Two Bible verses that shape our understanding of this are:
John 1:14 – “The Word became flesh and blood and moved into the neighborhood.”
John 20:21 – “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”
We are sent into our neighborhoods and communities to embody Christ in both word and deed. This means we serve our community with practical acts of support and care that flourish and prosper our city alongside sharing our hope in the all-sufficiency of Jesus. We believe every follower of Jesus is a missionary in their local neighborhood and social setting. Therefore, we encourage and equip each person to be on mission each day to share God’s love in both tangible and life affirming ways.
Below are a few specific ways our church is joining Jesus on His mission to West Seattle and the south Sound.
Arbor Heights Elementary Partnership
We’ve been partnering with Arbor Heights Elementary since 2017 with a common vision to support the school and its programs in serving students and families, increase our shared vision for community engagement and transformation and practically demonstrating the love of Christ. Through this partnership we:
- Pray for the school, students, staff and families
- Provide Christmas dinner boxes for families in need
- Provide teacher appreciation gifts
- Conduct an annual CityServe day cleaning up the school and grounds
- Offer a weekly after-school program on Wednesdays
- Provide an emergency crises fund for families in financial need
- Give general support and assistance
Come join us in volunteering at Arbor Heights Elementary and continue making our community a thriving place to live!
West Seattle Foster Support Faith Alliance (FSFA)
Over the last couple of years, AHCC has worked with the West Seattle FSFA to support and donate clothing, supplies, toys and other needed items to children and youth in the foster care program. Some of our community groups have supported a local West Seattle or White Center DSHS branch through supplying gift cards and necessary supplies to help youth in transition.
Trunk or Treat
The last two years AHCC has hosted an annual Trunk or Treat event on Halloween outside our church building to provide treats, games, hot cocoa and fun to the community. People park their cars at the church building, decorate their trunks and pass out candy to those tricker-treating. Some cars have fun games to play and we serve cocoa and coffee as well. This has been a great community-building event that gets neighbors out in the streets talking and connecting.
